About Me

My name is Matilda Tay and I am currently a Year 2 Business Studies student, studying at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I am seeking for an entry-level position in Human Resource Management.

I always carry an optimism mindset in everything I do. My peers can rely on me as I take things seriously. Be it at work or during co-curricular activities, I will put in my best to learn new knowledge and improve on old skills. For example, when I happened to meet with a difficult customer, I will not be discouraged. I will put in my best to help that customer and hope to meet his/her need. I believe that nothing is impossible as long as I put in my best.

Along my 18 years, I realized that life is full of obstacles and challenges. During times of difficulties or when I am feeling tired, I will always stop what I am doing and reflect. I put myself together and go on with the battle.

I love motivating not only myself, but my peers too. When met with a problem, I will strive to think of as many ways to solve the problems. I am always organized with my notes, thus my peers can rest assured that everything will be done timely.

Reason for leave: Starting of tertiary education

Working as a Sales Associate at Bossini gives me a lot of new experiences. I have learnt how to properly serve different type of customers and to provide them with good service. I remembered that I once served a lady customer who had difficulty in finding clothes due to her size. I tried my best to attain to her every need. I gave suggestions and in the end, we managed to come to an agreement of the perfect clothing. She was really happy which makes me glad. I did not give up but gave my all in helping her, which was the key in customer service in my opinion. Not only learning the skills of serving customers, I learnt how to do alteration of clothing. It was not easy, but I managed to get it done. I am always carrying an optimism mindset, which lead to many successful endeavors.

Worked as a Sales Assistant at Crabtree and Evelyn, Centrepoint
Duration: October 2010 – early December 2010
Reason for leave: Commitment with school work

Working at Crabtree and Evelyn gives me new product knowledge of the different body and skin products. With a previous experience in serving customers, it was already a head start to my job. Crabtree had a preview for members every year during November. I helped out in the intensive 5 days preview. The first day was flooded with customers as it was a public holiday too. I was in-charge of controlling the crowd and queue outside the store. It was not an easy task, as with the overwhelming customers, many of them ended up waiting for 2 hours for payment. Many customers were frustrated and started scolding me. I apologize one by one, which in turns it became personal to me. I tear a little, but got up strongly again after getting encouragement from my colleagues. This experience teaches me to be more confident and it builds up my courage. The remaining days of preview was smooth-sailing with the courage I build up on the first day.

Co-curricular Activities

Secondary School Co-curricular Activities
I was an active member in Chinese Dance. I have a passion for dancing and have an interest in joining and learning new skills. Besides being an active member, I was also the Recreational Officer during Secondary 2, and a Secretary in Secondary 3. Being both a Recreational Officer and Secretary, brings out the responsibility that I bring to the club. I play my part in organizing recreational activities for my fellow dancers. As a secretary, I attentively took down important notes during committee meetings. We usually have trainings on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. We will have more training during preparation of events such as Chinese New Year, Teachers’ Day, and even external performance for the Red Cross Home for the disabled. When preparing for Singapore Youth Festival (SYF), my fellow dancers and I will have intensive trainings almost 3 times a week. During this intensive period, it was really energy-draining and everyone was lethargic. However, with an optimism mindset, I often encouraged my fellow dancers not to give up. We will always find ways to make training even more interesting and fun so as to motivate us. As there is always a saying, “You reap what you sow”, indeed all our hard work paid off as we attained a Gold award for our SYF 2007.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Co-curricular Activities
I am a member of BA envoys. During a visit to Ngee Ann’s Open House 2009, the envoys at the business school inspired and I admired them. I was warmly welcomed into the Business block and being feed with information about the different courses offered at Business & Accountancy (BA). Seeing all the envoys filled with enthusiasm and great public speaking skills made me wanted to join as a member when I entered Ngee Ann. Frankly speaking, I am quite an introverted person. However, I am not afraid of changes, and I hope through envoys I could be a more outspoken person. I had participated in many activities in envoys. For example, the annually held Open House which I helped out. We had public speaking trainings to allow us to practice our delivery in front of our fellow envoys members. It was all smooth sailing, as the more practice, the better it gets. I enjoy talking to parents and students during Open House. There is a sense of responsibility of me to let them have well-feed information about the different courses. Through all this events, it builds up my confidence and I believe I am a more outspoken person now.
